PORTOCOLOM

About Portocolom

As a traditional fishing village, Portocolom exudes a special charm. Coupled with good restaurants, a wonderful house beach - Cala Marcal - and many other beautiful bays and excursion destinations in the area, Portocolom is an ideal holiday destination and is also very popular for long-term residents. Portocolom impresses with its idyllic lighthouse and also offers the largest natural harbor in Mallorca.
Incidentally, the name of the port comes from Christopher Columbus, as this certain legend says that he was born here.
Portocolom is an ideal place for everyone who appreciates peace and nature, but still doesn't want to do without well-frequented restaurants and a lively harbor promenade in summer. Portocolom is also an ideal place to relax in winter, but thanks to the restaurants that are open all year round, it never gets boring.

Beaches in Portocolom

The main beach of Portocolom is Cala Marcal, which we generally consider to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca. Here you will find turquoise water and fine, white sandy beaches. There are sun loungers and a chiringuito with delicious drinks and food. There are also other restaurants in the immediate vicinity. In addition to the main beach, Cala Marcal, there is also the s'Arenal beach, which can be reached by driving towards the lighthouse. The beach is sheltered from the wind and offers a beautiful view of the natural harbor. The beach cannot keep up with Cala Marcal in terms of sand and water, but is still popular with the locals thanks to its easy accessibility with direct parking.
Nature lovers should definitely visit s'Algar too. You won't find a sandy beach here, but there are swimming opportunities and the area is ideal for lovely walks along the coast. s'Algar is a popular place for campers and many Mallorcans also meet there in the evening for a picnic.

Beaches in the area

Cala Sa Nau is located south of Portocolom, in the direction of Cala d'or. A beautiful little bay with fantastic water, which is easy to reach and equipped with chirinquito. Like all small bays, it can of course quickly become overcrowded here in high season. A little further on is Cala Mitjana, which can be reached with a bit of a walk or by boat. In the neighboring town of Cala d'Or you can also find beautiful beaches such as Cala Gran, Cala Ferrera or Cala Serena, all of which are worth visiting.
All year round for us one of the most beautiful places in Mallorca is the nature reserve "Parc natural de mondrago". There are the beaches S'Amarrador, Cala Mondrago and Calo des Borgit, which offer a picturesque idyll. There are also easy walks here for active vacationers. The nature reserve can be reached by car, but it is definitely worth a day trip by boat.
North of Portocolom we recommend Cala Murada or Cala Domingo, which can be reached after a short drive. Another popular bay almost near Porto Cristo, about 20 minutes from Portocolom, is Cala Romantica.

Excursion tips

In addition to beaches, the east coast has much more to offer. The most beautiful coastal walks can be made, for example, in S'Algar, Cales de Mallorca or at Cala LLombards in the direction of Calo del Moro. If you prefer to be in the village, you should definitely pay a visit to Santanyi. Wednesdays and Saturdays are also market day here.
If you want to enjoy a beautiful view, drive to the Santuari de Sant Salvador in Felanitx.
For those who like to walk along the sea, the half-hour drive to the Far des Cap de ses Salines is worthwhile. To the right of the lighthouse you can walk here wonderfully and after a 20-30 minute walk you can also reach a beach.
If the journey can be a bit longer, you should also visit the north of Mallorca. You should definitely have made a trip to Cap Formentor with a stop at Playa Formentor. This can ideally be combined, for example, with a visit to the market in Pollenca on a Sunday.
The famous Es Trenc beach is only 35 minutes away from Portocolom. In the high season it can be very crowded, so we personally recommend Es Trenc in the low season and in winter. When the weather is nice, you can enjoy wonderful walks on the beach with a wonderful view of the turquoise water. As a refreshment stop before or after, a visit to the small but beautiful port of Colonia Sant Jordi is worthwhile.

Mallorca with its many facets still offers numerous excursion tips and simply beautiful places that surprise and inspire us again and again. We are here for you for personal recommendations and things to see across the island :-)

Weekly markets

In Mallorca every day is market day, because almost every village has its own weekday on which the market takes place. For Mallorcans, this is usually a good occasion to meet up with the neighbors, have a chat, but also buy fresh fruit, vegetables and many other goods and specialties. As a tourist, the market days are the ideal opportunity to get to know a new village or simply to combine a trip to the island with a visit to the market.

Tuesday is market day in Portocolom. The market takes place all year round from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Carrer de la Marina, although it can end earlier in the off-season. The market is not too big even in the high season, but nice for a short walk and for shopping for fresh fruit and vegetables.
A large and for us one of the most beautiful markets in the direct vicinity of Portocolom takes place on Saturday morning in Santanyi. The market has many stalls and there is always a very nice, happy atmosphere in the beautiful town of Santanyi. In the even closer Felanitx there is a large market on Sundays, which also offers numerous stalls. Campos, which is only 25 minutes from Portocolom, also has a large market on Saturdays.

We would be happy to list the other weekly markets on the island for you. In small villages the markets often only consist of a few stalls, so don't be disappointed. We have marked a few of the larger markets in bold. If you have any questions as to whether a visit to the market is worthwhile or whether the market is taking place, please feel free to contact us.
